CURRENT EVENTS PAST EVENTS Invitation to participate in the Geomatics Speakers Series at the British Columbia Institute of Technology. The Vancouver Branch of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics is inviting speakers from the private sector and government agencies to speak to the Geomatics Student about topics applicable to their future careers. We need 8 speakers for this program. Please let me know if you are interested in being a speaker. The program is an opportunity for you talk about an interesting project, program or career. This program brings the Geomatics professionals to the BCIT campus and offers the Geomatics students insight into their future profession. Past speakers from Telus and Terasen gave presentations on Geographic Information Systems. The Association of BC Land Surveyors talked about how to obtain a land surveyor’s commission. The Land Title and Survey Authority spoke about Crown Land surveys and treaties in BC, and the Canadian Hydrographic Service gave presentations on offshore surveys. Mapping firms and land surveying companies gave presentations on interesting projects and the application of new technology. Equipment suppliers demonstrated the newest models of GPS and total stations. I am inviting you to participate in this program as a speaker. If you are able to make a presentation to the Geomatics students, please let me know so that we can schedule the speakers for the next two semesters, Sept 2012 to April 2013, for the BCIT Geomatics Program. We need 8 presenters.
CIG Speaker Series at BCIT Speaker: Mike Thompson, P.Eng, FEC Mike Thompson graduated from the University of Calgary in 1988. He worked for several mapping companies before he and Nick Dudley formed Dudley Thompson Mapping Corp. in 2006. Using the latest technologies in hardware and software they are equipped to handle a large range of mapping projects such as; • Engineering level mapping for Highways and Mine Development. Topic: A Bit of Old and New Mike will present a method to provide evidence of the existence, or non-existence of roads or other cultural data using aerial photography dating back into the 1920’s. With this evidence a surveyor can petition the courts to render a decision on the position of the road and if the road and right of way are in violation of any previous or standing agreements. He will then delve into the most exciting technology to hit the survey
and mapping community since digital Photogrammetry in the late 1980’s.
Mobile Mapping Systems (MMS) using vehicle mounted lasers and integrated
with GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) technology. These systems
provide an extremely fast and accurate way to record as-built information

detail, please view ************* "Brown Bag Lunch" Mr. Ian Horseman from Telus will be talking to the GIS students
at Selkirk College in Castlegar about applications of GIS at Telus. Your
members who live and work in this part of BC may wish to attend. Can you
circulate the attached poster to members of the Assoc. of Canada Lands
Surveyors and the Assoc. of BC Land Surveyors. Dinner meeting with guest speaker, Mr. Tim Koepke will talk about treaties in British Columbia. The meeting will be held on Thursday Oct 8th at the Keg conference centre at the corner of Hornby and Dunsmuir. Pre-registration is requsted as the dinner meeting is being catered at the Keg Conference centre. We also need to have a minimum of 40 people for this venue, please come and join us. This meeting counts towards your continuing professional development (CPD) program. *** Thursday Sept 17th there will be a dinner meeting on Aboriginal

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. The Vancouver Branch of the Canadian Institute of Geomatics will hold a Dinner Meeting and Annual General Meeting on Thursday November 20, 2008. Peter Burns will speak about Highway Surveys and Road Dedication. Start time will be at 6:00 Location to be announced. Tuesday Brown Bag Lunches at BCIT 2008/2009 There is no charge to attend, they open to students, faculty, CIG members and anyone interested in hearing the presentations.
